Stay at Prehen House

Prehen House is one of the North West’s most historic buildings. Situated next to the famous woods, it commands stunning views of Derry, the river Foyle and the hills beyond. Prehen is intimately linked with the history of Derry. Records reveal that it was inhabited by 1640; in 1738 the Knox family began their great association with Prehen when Andrew Knox, the MP for Donegal married Honoria Tomkins, the Prehen heiress. In Victorian times the colourful Colonel George Knox was one of Derry’s most eminent figures. But with World War I looming his grandson Baron George Carl Otto Louis von Scheffler Knox was put under house arrest. Soon after the 3,641 acre estate was seized as ‘enemy property’. Happily, the house was brought back into another branch of the Knox family and today the North West has a wonderful heirloom forever linked with the history of the City. Now you can experience living and dining in the city's most historic building. Please contact us for further details.

The Cottage

Rustic two storey cottage within the parklands of historic Prehen House, Prehen House is a Grade A listed building and described by the Ulster Architectural Heritage Society as a national treasure. Home to the legend of Half-Hanged McNaughton, it is thought to have inspired elements of the book, Wuthering Heights. Guests to the Coach house are offered a tour at reasonable times.

On arrival we will be happy to show you how to use the antique cooker and woodstove, and will be available during your stay to conduct further lessons if required. Much of the furniture is in keeping with such a cottage. It is clean and durable and suitable for the rigors of an active family.

The Property is surrounded by woodland and with that in mind please don't be surprised if you find the odd woodland insect trying to piggyback on your stay. We have invaded their space so it's only natural that they might want to see what ours is like. You may find the property unsuitable if you arrive here expecting to find a 42 inch LED or Wi-Fi. I do have Wi-Fi in the main house and will be more than happy at a reasonable hour to let you connect with outside life, (although it may in some ways spoil the tranquility of your stay).

Available for Bed & Breakfast or self-catering. Two miles from the City Centre and next to Derry City's championship golf course. Enjoy the peaceful Irish country-side only five minutes drive from the lively City-centre. Prehen Wood's nature trail and Riverwatch nearby. Easy access to the Faughan river and tributaries for trout and salmon fishing. Minutes walk away from the luxury Everglades Hotel bar and restaurant. Derry is an ideal base to explore both the Causway coast and Donegal. Glenveagh National Park is a one hour drive from Derry. £10 taxi ride to gourmet destination Harry's Restaurant of Bridgend. The Department of the Environment conducted an archaeological excavation of the recently discovered 1620's fort within the grounds. Self-catering: £450 per week, £120 one night only otherwise £85 per night. Bed and Breakfast: £35 per night per person sharing. £50 per night single occupancy. Price includes continental breakfast.
